Pets of VUMC 2019 — Collection #6: Here’s looking at you, part 2

Natalie Shallow, Medical Genetics and Genomic Medicine. “Watson is a rescue pup who is a little over a year old. He enjoys flopping onto his belly for all the pets he can get and loves to play chase at the dog park.”

This is the sixth installment of photographs submitted by VUMC employees to the 2019VUMC Voice Pet Photo Contest. Hundreds of pictures were submitted for the contest, and while we won’t be able to use all, or even most, of the pictures we received, we hope to showcase a good sample of the best of the beasts.

Remember, the top prize offered in the contest is a photo of your pet in VUMC Voice.

If you missed sending in an entry this year, and your pet is peeved about it, please reassure him or her that there will be a VUMC Voice Pet Photo Contest next year, but explain that the deadline for entries for this year has passed, and no more pictures will be accepted. We hope your pet understands.

Michele Salzman, Anesthesiology Research. “Josie is named after the cartoon ‘Josie & the Pussycats.’ As a stray kitty back in Wisconsin nine years ago, she chose to adopt me and my dogs Prada and Troy.”

Michelle Murphy, Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism. “My 10-year-old shih tzu Sasha Fierce who loves a good nap and Beggin’ Strips.”

Elizabeth Canfield, Hematology. Lady the black and tan coonhound.

Aida Yared, Pediatrics. “This is River, a 5-year-old border collie. He loves running, chasing squirrels, and catching tennis balls.”

Leslie Wilkes, Cardiac Cath. “Our mischievous cat’s name is Stripes. She thought the Easter bunny had all the fun sitting in baskets all day, so she thought she would give it a try.”

Katherine Bashaw, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. Molly.

Andi Honeycutt, MNPS Employee and Family Health Clinics. “Wilma is 8 years old and was hand raised as a chick. She lays an occasional egg and is very friendly. She lives by herself and is very happy to do so. Her favorite food is tortilla chips.”

Jacquie Mingle, Cardiology. “This is our precious cat Molly. She was a stray and we love her.”

Elisa Grady, Pathology. “Dalanee’ is the ‘Pampered Princess.’ She’s a 7-month-old Yorkie. She loves shopping for new clothes and hair bows.”

Randy Tjahjono, Health IT. “This is Biscuit, rescued in rural West Tennessee as a kitten when she crawled out of a ditch. After getting cleaned up and nursed to health, Biscuit immigrated to Middle Tennessee where she has spent the past three years terrorizing small children, losing fights with squirrels, sleeping a lot, and generally acting like she owns the place.”

Erin Hardiman, Psychiatry. “Before being adopted from Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue, Macy was a street dog for nearly a year. So needless to say, she thinks baths are overrated, as you can tell by the look on her face.”

Joey Qualls, Human Resources. “King (Tuner) Neptune (an ode to my Navy and Nashville roots) was about 12 weeks old when we adopted him from the Humane Society of Sumner County in July of 2017. He was described as a ‘Puggle’ on his record, but we could not see the Pug in him, so we had a DNA test conducted. The results came back as ½ Boston terrier, ½ beagle. You could call him a Boston beagle or a boggle, but we have decided to call him a ‘beastie.’ All we know is he is one of a kind. He’s a true snowbird, as he spends his summers on our family farm in the north, and winters here in the south, and there isn’t a two-legged or four-legged animal he doesn’t like.”

Victoria Harris, retired faculty, current volunteer. “Spanky is an 8-year-old shih tzu. He rescued me at a time when I needed unconditional love. He has been a registered pet therapy dog for much of his life. We visit at VICC & OHO.”

Patrick Davie, IT and Kayla Goodman, Clinical Trials. “Bean – 8 month old Pug, randomly growls at nothing.”

Kyle Harris, Clinical Enterprise Strategic Planning. “Layla is a mini golden-doodle and is 4 months old.”

Cindy Nettles, Speech and Hearing. “This is Lottie. She is 19 years old and holding her own. She has been my oldest living kitty. She is very much aloof, but does cry in the middle of the night if I am away.”

Pam Krueger, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. “Linus is a 1 ½-year-old Yorkie mix adopted from Petfinder. He’s in his second training class cause he’s learning to be a lover not a fighter.”

Angela Rios Pagán, Electrophysiology Lab. “Taco is a Chihuahua mix rescue who is 3 years old. He is a very friendly, social little guy, though partial to older folks. He loves his toys and enjoys playing outdoors with his oversized soccer ball.”
