“When I think about the culture of Vanderbilt, the first thing that comes to mind are the people and the importance of patient care,” said Donna Oates, assistant to the chair, Department of Dermatology. Oates’ contributions were recently recognized with the 2019 Administrative Professional Award from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

“I work with and interact with so many dedicated, talented faculty and staff and I continue to learn from them every day,” Oates said.

She received the award on April 23 during a reception and celebration of Administrative Professionals Week. The award was presented by Traci Nordberg, VUMC’s Chief Human Resources Officer.

“When you interact with Donna, you walk away feeling taken care of and heard, but — even more — Donna is an extraordinary leader who inspires us all with her kindness and creativity.”

When asked about her day-to-day work priorities, Oates’ talks about interactions among colleagues and about service. “It’s so important to find the joy of saying hello, calling each person by his or her name,” she said.

In their nomination letter, the group that nominated Oates highlighted her attitude and work ethic. The comments from Oates’ colleagues included:

“When you interact with Donna, you walk away feeling taken care of and heard, but — even more — Donna is an extraordinary leader who inspires us all with her kindness and creativity.”

“The enthusiasm and joy that Donna has for work is extremely contagious.”

“Donna has an inspiring and infectious focus on others and their feelings.”

The nomination also highlighted Oates’ contribution during a period last year when Dermatology found itself with two open administrative positions. “Donna was essential in keeping the department functioning administratively through her excellent work ethic and with a positive attitude.”

The VUMC Administrative Professional Award was established in 2016 in honor of the late Mary Etta Skeen, who served as an assistant to Vanderbilt University and VUMC leaders during a career that spanned more than three decades.

There were 34 nominees this year. The award recognizes individuals who:

  • Achieve tasks and tackle problems with resourcefulness and innovation
  • Consistently suggest new processes, improving and impacting productivity of the administrator or department they serve
  • Go above and beyond expected job duties
  • Demonstrate concern and compassion for co-workers and elevate others ahead of themselves
  • Model Credo behavior and consistently meet or exceed expectations on annual performance evaluations
  • Build relationships and foster teamwork across departments

VUMC Human Resources will open nominations for the 2020 award with a housewide announcement early next year.
