Staff Nurses of the Year named
Rosamund Gabrielson Staff Nurse of the Year recipients were announced representing the four entities of VUMC

Four Vanderbilt nurses representing different entities of the Medical Center have been named Rosamond Gabrielson Staff Nurse of the Year.
The award is named in honor of Rosamond Gabrielson, RN, who arrived at VUMC in 1976 as the director of Nursing, immediately following her tenure as president of the American Nurses Association. During her 12 years at Vanderbilt, she helped establish nursing bylaws and staff action committees, which ultimately led to what is now known as shared governance.
Gabrielson retired from Vanderbilt in 1988 and died in 2000. Her legacy left a significant footprint on Vanderbilt nursing, for which she was posthumously honored in 2018 at the Office of Diversity Affairs’ second-annual Hidden VUMC Figures event.
Rosamund Gabrielson Staff Nurse of the Year recipients were announced representing the four entities of VUMC – Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital and Vanderbilt Adult Ambulatory Clinics. These nurses were chosen by the Nursing Staff Councils from each entity.
The recipients are:
Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt: Stevie Crossland, BSN, RN, Children’s Hospital Radiology Recovery
Stevie Crossland. From the nomination: “Stevie consistently seeks out opportunities to improve patient care. Not only does she do whatever is asked of her, but she also seeks out opportunities to improve the patient care experience. Stevie is an excellent and respected mentor on the unit. She educates in an encouraging, uplifting manner, in which new hires can learn the unit.” Photo by Donn Jones
Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital: Allison Jagoda, BSN, RN, BS, MS, CCRN, Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU).
Allison Jagoda. From the nomination: “One of Allison’s strengths as a nurse is her willingness to get to the reasoning behind decision making. She is an incredible patient advocate no matter the expected course. If we are full-speed-ahead trying every possible therapy, Allison is making sure the team has the info they need for decision making, while ensuring she understands the plan of care.” Photo by Steve Green
Vanderbilt Adult Ambulatory Clinic: Brenda Weedman, RN, CDE, Vanderbilt Eskind Diabetes Center.
Brenda Weedman. From the nomination: “Brenda is passionate about helping patients with diabetes improve their understanding of the disease, learn to manage glucose and prevent complications both acute and long term. The patients are always treated with compassion and respect. It is very evident that she cares for her patients and strives to deliver the best, evidenced based teaching at all times.” Photo by Erin O. Smith
Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital. Savannah Young, BSN, RN-BC, VPH Float Pool.
Savannah Young. From the nomination: “She is a preceptor on the unit. She has received students who work with her on the floor, and she regularly precepts new staff members. Her experience and calm demeanor make her an effective resource to others on the unit.”
